The fourth annual Darlington Mayor’s Song Contest has concluded after local primary school students sung their hearts out.

Songs from musical theatre was the theme for this year’s event, which was held in a bid to raise money for the Mayor’s charities and good causes. A total of 23 schools took part in the event, which was hugely popular.

Following much deliberation and tough decisions from the judges, Federation of Mowden School was crowned the winner with their performance of ‘Spoonful of Sugar’ from Mary Poppins.

In second place was High Coniscliffe CE Primary School, with ‘The Deadwood Stage’ from Calamity Jane, and following in third was St Augustine’s RC Primary School with their rendition of ‘I Feel Pretty’ from West Side Story.

The contest was sponsored by the Darlington Building Society. Peter Barron, the ambassador for Darlington Building Society, was there for the evening.

Councillor Veronica Copeland, Mayor of Darlington, said:

“It was a fantastic night and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing all of the acts our young people had put together. I was very impressed by the performances and I know the judges had an extremely hard time choosing the winners.”

The idea for the Mayor’s primary school Song Contest was born from former Mayor Cllr Tom Nutt’s lifelong passion for international links and the towns’ associated twinning arrangements.
