Improvement works on Carmel Road North

Improvement works on Carmel Road North
09 August 2019

Work to carry out structural and surface repairs is underway on Carmel Road North.

Although vehicle access has been maintained as much as possible up to this point, the road will need be closed during the next phase.

From Monday 12 until Friday 16 August, Carmel Road North will be closed from Nunnery Lane to Clareville Road. During this time, Nunnery Lane and Clareville Road will be restricted to traffic turning left only.

This is to allow construction of a new pedestrian crossing and drainage works.

Patching and resurfacing works will then be carried out between Friday 16 and Saturday 24 August.

There are some areas that need to be dug up and repaired, which will result in the road being closed.

This work has been split into two phases to minimise disruption. The phases are:

Phase 1: From the north side of Highbury Road junction, southwards to the north side of Milbank Road junction.

Phase 2: From the north side of Milbank Road junction, southwards to the north side of Abbey Road junction.

Only one section will be closed at a time.

There will be no access to through traffic between Staindrop Road and Coniscliffe Road at any time during the works.

Alternative routes will be signed via Coniscliffe Road/Grange Road, Victoria Road, St Cuthbert’s Way, St Augustine’s Way, Bondgate, Woodland Road and vice versa.

Public transport

From Friday 16 to Monday 19 August, Arriva’s number 3 bus will be operating to the town centre via Swaledale Avenue and Staindrop Road, in both directions.

There will be a temporary bus stop at the Birkdale/Swaledale junction for journeys towards the town centre.

The above dates and times are our best indications as it stands and can be affected by the weather. However, we will post updates should the timings change.

Access will be maintained to local residents and businesses throughout the works.
