New booking system for Darlington tip

New booking system for Darlington tip
18 May 2020

A new booking system for Darlington’s Household Waste Recycling Centre (tip) is to be introduced in a bid to improve access for residents.

The tip, in Mewburn Road, off Whessoe Road, had been closed temporarily following the introduction of the nationwide ‘lockdown’ during the Covid-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.

It was reopened on 28 April for ‘essential’ use only, following the introduction of strict social distancing measures to ensure the safety of staff and residents using the site.

However, demand has seen queues forming as residents wait to use the site causing traffic congestion in the area.

The new online booking system, which is free, will go ‘live’ to take bookings on Monday 25 May – with slots available from 1 June onwards - in a bid to improve access and reduce congestion  by staggering users.

Councillor Andy Keir, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for local services, said:

“We’ve introduced safe working practices to allow social distancing guidelines to be met and to ensure the safety of staff and local residents – but this does mean fewer people can use the facility at any one time.

“We have been monitoring the situation since the tip reopened but while the system has been working well, and despite our reminders that people should only use the tip if absolutely essential, we have seen queues forming on a regular basis.

“This is why we’re now introducing the free booking system to help reduce waiting times for residents and avoid traffic congestion on the roads.

“It’s simple to use – just fill in the online form on our website. This will be an interim measure and we will keep things under review.”

The decision has also been taken to close Whessoe Road at the junction of Burtree Lane to through traffic for safety reasons. Access for local business and residents will remain. This will come into force at 7am on Wednesday 20 May and is expected to stay in place until the booking system is implemented on 1 June. Road closures will be in place at all times of the day, with signed diversions in place for all approaches to Whessoe Road.

Whessoe Road will be open for access to residents and busineses, with the only access being from the south (Longfield Road junction).

The tip (Household Waste Recycling Centre) is open seven days a week, 8am-4.30pm and has strict social distancing measures in place, so please follow the signs and instructions from staff on site. Please note last entry is 4pm, to enable staff to clear and prepare the site for the following day.

You should only travel to the HWRC as a last resort to dispose of household waste.

The facility is for Darlington residents only and you will be asked to show proof of address on arrival. Anyone who arrives at the tip without a booking, or proof of address, will be turned away.

The tip sometimes has to close due to poor weather, such as high winds. If this happens any bookings will be cancelled, those affected should receive a text and will need to re-book.

More details and the online booking form can be found at - the booking form will not be available until Monday 25 May, for dates/times from 1 June onwards.
