Town centre car park to reopen after revamp

Town centre car park to reopen after revamp
12 August 2020

Improvement works in Abbott’s Yard, a short stay car park in Darlington town centre, are set to be completed this week.

Works to improve drainage across the site are now finished and the car park will be resurfaced in full before new lining is put in place, which will change the layout of the parking spaces on offer. All 22 disabled parking spaces in Abbott's Yard have been retained within the new layout.

The resurfacing will start on Monday, August 10 and is expected to take three days, followed by a day to paint the new lining, subject to favourable weather conditions.

It is expected that the car park will be reopened to vehicles and pedestrians on Friday, August 14 – if there are any delays due to the weather we will place alerts on social media.

Councillor Andy Keir, cabinet member for local services, said: “Abbott’s Yard is our most central car park and provides good access to shops and facilities in much of the town centre so I’m pleased to say that the refurbishment of the site has gone to plan and it will reopen this week.

“The refurbishment has given us the opportunity to improve the layout of the spaces across the site to provide better access for drivers.”

Parking remains free in all council-run car parks and on-street parking spaces around the town centre.
