Tribute to HRH the Duke of Edinburgh
09 April 2021

Following the news that HRH Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh has passed away, Councillor Heather Scott, Leader of Darlington Borough Council, has joined those paying tribute.

She said: "It was with great sadness we learnt today of the passing of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness gave many decades of service to this country, his presence alongside Her Majesty the Queen a familiar sight for longer than most of us can remember.

"The royal couple visited Darlington in 1967 as part of the centenary celebrations of our Charter of Incorporation, granted by Queen Victoria 100 years earlier. A photograph of them smiling on the balcony of the former Town Hall hangs in a prominent place, close to the Council Chamber.

"As a mark of respect, the flag at the Town Hall will be flown at half-mast during this period of national mourning.

"We will be sending a message of condolence to Her Majesty and the wider royal family on behalf of the Council and the people of Darlington."
