Community radio contest encourages teens to ‘play their part'

A community radio contest has launched to encourage teenagers in Darlington to ‘play their part’ and support the town’s Covid-19 public health messaging.

The contest, open to all teenagers aged 14-18 in Darlington, is a joint venture between Darlo Radio, Darlington Borough Council and its partner organisations.

Phil Osbourne, Programme Director and Presenter at Darlo Radio, said: “Throughout the pandemic, Darlo Radio has been really keen to support the town in fighting against Covid-19.

“Now that restrictions are easing, we know that it’s still really important for all of us in Darlington to continue doing our bit – and we want to help get that message out there.

“The play your part competition is an excellent way to engage with the community, particularly our younger members, and let them have their input into the town’s really important health and safety messaging as we move into summer.”

Councillor Kevin Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Health & Housing at the Council, said: “We’re excited to work on this community project with Darlo Radio and our partners.

“For all of us, the pandemic has been really challenging – but this is especially true for our younger residents, who have missed out on so much in the last year.

“We can’t wait to get back to a more normal way of life, including to music festivals and big events, but the only way that will happen is if we all continue to keep Darlington on the right track.

“It’s really important for us to give young people in Darlington the opportunity to have their say in how we encourage our communities to continue playing our part – this project is a fantastic way to do just that.”

The competition is of particular interest for teens across the borough who are interested in media, marketing, health and politics to enter their own 30 second radio advert on the topic of 'Play your part - Why teens need to fight against Covid-19'.

The radio adverts can include information on how teens can help protect the Darlington communities from Covid-19, why teens should take the Covid-19 vaccine when they are eligible and why it is important for teens to stay vigilant against Covid-19 as we move into summer.

The three winning entries will be invited to record their adverts at the Darlo Radio studios, which will have special measures in place to ensure the studio is Covid-safe, as well as receive a £30 AmazonUK voucher each.

Entries must be sent to [email protected], preferably in writing or in audio format via WeTransfer, before Monday 31 May 2021 to be considered.
