Revamped Cockerton library reopens with a ‘welcome back’ event
17 November 2021

Darlington Library’s popular Cockerton branch is set to reopen this weekend with a special ‘welcome back’ event.

The event will be held on Saturday (20 November) to celebrate the reopening, starting with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10am that will be attended by special guests. Entertainment for guests and visitors will follow, including award-winning magic, balloon modelling, face painting and music from local artists.

Customers old and new are invited to call in to enjoy the library’s new look and borrow a book. Anyone who takes out a book between 20 and 30 November will also be automatically entered into a draw to win one of several fantastic prizes, including an afternoon tea for two at Peartree Hill Tea Room and Cafe.

The Cockerton branch library, at Cockerton Green/Woodland Road, first opened its doors in September 1970. Its circular design, 57 feet in diameter, was drawn up by borough architect Eric Tornbohm and cost £15,500 to build.

The revamp has included brand new windows and new flooring, as well as an update to the general decoration and the canopy over the main entrance. In addition, a new, multi-coloured lighting system has also been installed.

Councillor Heather Scott, leader of the council, said: “We’re delighted to welcome visitors, old and new, to our new look Cockerton branch library.

“The building celebrated its 50th anniversary last year and we hope this revamp will enhance the facilities for library users for years to come.

“We want to thank everyone for their patience while the work was carried out and hope you will agree it was worth waiting for to have a refreshed and invigorated library.”

All entertainment will be free, but some activities will need to be pre-booked. Visitors can get their tickets for the bookable activities from 9am tomorrow (Thursday 18 November) by visiting www.darlington.gov.uk/library and Eventbrite.

From Monday, 22 November, the Cockerton branch library opening hours will be:

Tuesday:             2pm – 7pm

Wednesday:      9am – 1pm
