Council supports apprentices into work

Council supports apprentices into work
07 December 2021

In the last five years, more than 180 people have started an apprenticeship thanks to our support.

In 2017, the government introduced the apprenticeship levy – a charge designed to encourage employers to invest in and create apprenticeships.

Since the levy was introduced, we have helped create 188 opportunities for either existing staff or new apprentices with an investment of £760,700.

We partner with local training providers as well as colleges and universities, including Darlington College, Teesside University, Middlesbrough College, New College Durham, Sunderland University.

Apprenticeships allow someone to train whilst they work and are available for a wide range of jobs and careers – not just for those starting out.

We have offered apprenticeships at all levels in subjects including business administration; customer services; hospitality management; carpentry; plumbing; plastering; civil engineering and chartered accountant.

Heather Scott, leader of the council, said: “Apprenticeships are a great way to offer training to people as they work so they gain practical skills and qualifications to help them progress.

“Traditionally apprenticeships have been thought of as a way for young people to gain work experience while they train and whilst this is true for many apprentices, there are also lots of opportunities for people who are already in work to progress their career with an apprenticeship

“It is great that we have been able to support so many people to take advantage of everything apprenticeships have to offer.”
