Darlington Lights the way to a year of events

The first ever Darlington Lights event is set to take place in Darlington town centre From Tuesday 1 until Sunday 6 February and will help to light the way for a full programme of events in the town.

2022 will see the return of popular favourites such as the Vintage Vehicle Rally, Darlington Food & Drink Festival and Pride Weekender, alongside new events including Little Bird Markets launching on 27 February. A specially produced events brochure will be shortly available online and in print.

In addition, it is hoped the whole borough will join in the celebrations of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in early summer – a full programme of events will be announced soon.

Darlington Lights will see a variety of light installations in Darlington town centre. The celestial garden of sound at St. Cuthbert’s Church (Friday 4-7pm and Saturday noon – 6pm). A fantastic collection of pieces created by students from Darlington College will be on display in Queen Street shopping centre, plus a free lantern making workshop on Saturday 5 February in the Cornmill and pieces from local lighting businesses Gillian Arnold and The Light Owl along with lots more exciting works.

Councillor Alan Marshall, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for economy and regeneration, said:

“Working with partners and other groups, our events team has, once again, put together a great range of free events which will help to encourage people to come along to our wonderful town centre to browse the wide range of shops, sample the great cafes, bars and restaurants, and enjoy some free, family fun time.

“I would encourage everyone to follow our Facebook page and Love Darlo to make sure they don’t miss out on the fantastic events we have lined up for the year.”

Visitors to the town centre can take advantage of two hours free parking in council-run car parks and are advised to read all car parking signs carefully and display a ticket from the machine. Darlington Lights is funded by the Welcome Back fund
