We are putting climate change on the map
We are set to go on the map in our efforts to tackle climate change as we launch our first ever Zero Waste map.
The aim of the map is to help and encourage residents to repair, reduce, re-use and recycle more.
The online interactive map details a range of businesses and other venues across the town who offer recycling, upcycling, repair, equipment hire, refill facilities and foodbank drop off points, making it a one stop information point to help local people reduce their impact on the environment. Clicking on each location on the map will provide more information on the services available.
Our waste and climate change teams, along with a dedicated group of our employees, who have signed up to become climate change champions, have pooled their local knowledge to help compile the map that includes more than 50 venues. Further additions to the map are welcome and local businesses and residents are invited to suggest more venues that offer these services.
Councillor Alan Marshall, cabinet member for economy and portfolio lead for climate change, said:
“The team has worked hard to put together this map to help residents join us in our bid to tackle climate change. All too often, we see people throw away items that can be repaired or re-used. This adds to landfill and to the global issue of wasting what are the finite resources of our planet.
“By recycling and reusing, people can often make money and save money by selling items they no longer use rather than throwing them away or by having an item repaired instead of buying new.
“It may take a little more time and effort, but it is time well spent if it helps to safeguard our planet.”
Councillor Andy Keir, deputy leader of the council and cabinet member for local services added:
“As a council we are committed to recycling and collect thousands of tonnes of recycling every year in Darlington. This map will help to boost our recycling efforts by letting people know there are many other ways and places to recycle and reuse things they no longer need.”
