Join us for a special celebration this Saturday as we honour and support the heroes who help keep our community safe.

We will be hosting an Emergency Services Day on Saturday 1 July when we will be showing our pride and appreciation for the police, firefighters and other organisations who help us every day.

The event welcomes a host of emergency services vehicles and staff in the Market Square.

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service will have firefighters on hand to demonstrate their water rescue skills and will have a special fire appliance and fire engine on show.

There will be patrol cars from Durham Constabulary, staff from the council’s civic enforcement team, Durham Police and Crime Commissioner, and Northumbria Blood Bikes.

Jet and Ben, the community police dogs will be there, along with their handler Claire, as will the police motorbikes. The Darlington Neighbourhood Team will also on hand with some police cadets to talk about their work.

As well as meeting all the emergency services staff and looking at their vehciles, young visitors can also enjoy free face painting.

Amanda Riley, our cabinet member for stronger communities, said: “Our community safety team continues to develop very close working relationships with the emergency services and other organisations. We all have the same aim - to make Darlington a safe place for all to enjoy - and we are thrilled to be able to get together on this special day to say thanks to all those who work so hard in our communities.

“We’d love to see as many people as possible in the Market Square as we celebrate our local heroes who do so much for our community.”

Police neighbourhood inspector Jim O’Connor said “We are looking forward to supporting the dya and for the community to come and talk to us about what we do and how we can help. We hope the children will enjoy the day and we might meet the police officers of the future!”

Simon Davison, station manager for County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, said: “This is a great way to highlight the fantastic people who work within all emergency services, keeping us safe.

“I'm always incredibly proud to work alongside our emergency service colleagues."

The event in the Market Square runs from 10am-4pm.
