Runners get set for annual 10km race
30 July 2024

RUNNERS will take to the streets of Darlington this weekend for the annual 10km road race.

The popular event takes place on Sunday 4 August. The fun starts from 9am in the town centre with the family fun run, followed by the Junior 3km at 9.45am before the 10km starts at 10.30am

Following a review of the route, some important changes have been agreed that will ensure maximum safety for participants.

The run will now operate under a full road closure, meaning Woodlands Road and Carmel Road North Will be fully closed to all traffic, apart from emergency vehicles.

The following road closures will be in place:

Closed 6am to 2pm:

Horsemarket, Bull Wynd, Blackwellgate, High Row, Post House Wynd, East Row, Northgate, Prospect Place, Tubwell Row.

Closed 6am to 1pm:

Skinnergate, Bondgate, Houndgate, Commercial Street (from Regent House to Bondgate), Duke Street (from the rising bollard to Skinnergate), Grange Road (from Northumberland Street to Coniscliffe Road), Beaumont Street (from Houndgate to Beaumont Street West).

Closed from 9am to 1pm:

West Street, Stanhope Road, Woodlands Road (from Stanhope Road North to Staindrop Road), Carmel Road North.

Additionally, Feethams will be closed from 9am to 11.30am and Coniscliffe Road will be closed from Blackwellgate to West Street from 6am to 1pm, and from West Street to Carmel Road from 9am to 1pm.

For residents within these closures, the following access/egress points will be in operation:

  • Point 1: Pierremont Crescent (across Woodlands Road) onto Pierremont Road and vice versa
  • Point 2: Elton Parade (across Consicliffe Road) onto Hartford Drive and vice versa

Delays may build up at these access/egress points and residents are advised to make any necessary journeys outside of the closure times if possible.

There will be no vehicle access to West Cemetery, on Carmel Road North, between 9am and 1pm on Sunday 4 August. Pedestrian access will still be available and the Book of Remembrance Room will still be open.

Race Director Phil Haymer said: “The 10k is always a wonderful event, bringing together runners and families from Darlington and further afield. This year promises to be no different.

“I appreciate that the additional closures may cause further headaches for residents. I would like to thank them in advance for their patience and trust that they will understand that these extra closures are for everyone’s safety.”
