Government hub given the go-ahead

Government hub given the go-ahead
08 August 2024

A new government office development on Brunswick Street has been given the go-ahead by planners.

The application to construct a five-storey, 10,000 square metres government hub, put forward by the Government Property Agency (GPA), was approved by the council yesterday (Wednesday 7 August).

The new office will build on the success of the Darlington Economic Campus (DEC) which currently comprises Feetham House and Bishopsgate House, in the town centre.

Works on site are set to begin later this year and completion is earmarked for 2027.

Cllr Chris McEwan, cabinet member for economy, Darlington Borough Council, said: "We are committed to making sure Darlington has a strong, sustainable economic  future and I am delighted that the new government development, which will bring more high quality jobs to our town, has reached this significant milestone. The development will support continued inward investment to Darlington and is one of many projects on the horizon in the immediate vicinity, including the redevelopment of the former Northern Echo building on Priestgate into an adult skills facility and workspace."

Georgia Gould, Parliamentary Secretary for the Cabinet Office, said: "The new development will support Darlington’s economy and allow the Civil Service to draw on talent and skills across the region. This Government is committed to economic growth in every region of the UK and we will get behind cities and towns to deliver new jobs and opportunities for their communities."
