Library unveils latest technological addition
Darlington Library on Crown Street has unveiled its latest technological addition, Hublets, thanks to funding from Arts Council England.
The Hublets are tablet-like devices, offering library visitors a simple, user-friendly way to access digital resources.
The devices can be checked out directly within the library and provide easy access to eBooks, online newspapers, and various educational apps, as well as general internet access. They aim to bridge the digital divide, offering customers a flexible and accessible way to explore digital content without needing to bring their own device.
Library staff are thrilled to offer this service, which supports the library’s mission to enhance digital literacy and offer inclusive access to technology.
The Hublets are free to use and available to all library members, making it easier for the community to stay connected, informed, and entertained; and offer an easy way for people to do essential everyday tasks online such as paying bills, submitting information or making applications.
They are also designed with children in mind, offering a range of educational and entertaining apps suitable for younger users. One popular feature is the Moshi App, which provides calming stories, music, and mindfulness exercises to help children relax and unwind. Parents can feel confident that their children are engaging with safe, enriching content while at the library.
Councillor Libby McCollom, the council's cabinet member for local services, said: “With the support of funding from Arts Council England, this new initiative will help ensure the library continues to be a hub of learning and innovation, bringing both traditional and digital resources together in one welcoming space.
“They’re a great addition for our younger members too - whether they’re exploring educational games, reading eBooks, or enjoying quiet time with Moshi, the Hublets offer a fun and interactive way for children to experience digital learning.
“So do pop into the library and give them a try next time you’re in town.”
