A new initiative set up by Durham Police, Darlington Borough Council and the Cornmill Shopping Centre is inviting members of the public to voice their opinions and help make Darlington town centre a safe and inviting place to visit.

Hosted once a month at Esquires Coffee in the Cornmill Centre, the Cuppa with a Copper informal meetings are a chance for members of the public to raise any concerns and discuss any issues over a delicious cup of coffee.

Representatives from Durham Police, Darlington Borough Council’s anti-social behaviour and CCTV teams, and Cornmill Centre Security will be in attendance to listen and support.

The first event was held in January, with monthly meetings to follow on the following Wednesdays, from 1pm to 3pm: 19 February, 19tMarch, 16 April, 14 May, 11 June, 9 July, 6 August, 3 September, 15 October, 12 November and 10 December.

Inspector Matt Plumb, from Darlington neighbourhood team said: “The first ‘Cuppa with a copper’ event was a huge success and something we are keen to replicate throughout the year for the town.

“We are committed to making Darlington safer for business, visitors and our residents and one of the ways to do that is by listening to their concerns - events like these allow us to reach those who aren’t often in contact with the police but want to speak to us and share ideas.

“We’d like to thank our partners Darlington Borough Council and the Cornmill Centre for their support in getting this vital initiative off the ground and are looking forward to seeing the pay off.”

Zoe France, Centre Manager of the Cornmill Centre said: “I believe this initiative will be vital in creating a friendly and inviting place for visitors to shop, socialise and enjoy themselves.

“It is a great opportunity, not just to contribute to improving our fantastic town centre, but also just to come for a chat and a coffee with others who are passionate about Darlington.”
