Historic building set for redevelopment

Historic building set for redevelopment
25 February 2025

Work to redevelop the former home, of the prominent Quaker Robson family in Darlington, will start next week (Monday 3 March).

Funded by the Government, the project seeks to transform the neglected four storey, grade II* listed building on Northgate into high quality office space for small businesses and bring more jobs to the area. Bought by Darlington Borough Council in June 2023, the building is a key development within a wider scheme of work to regenerate the town centre and plans to breathe new life into the Northgate Conservation Area.

Construction company Compass Development NE Ltd., which has extensive experience in developing commercial and residential properties across the North East, will manage the work, which includes alterations to allow level access to the building, a new internal ramp and the demolition of a conservatory and external staircase. Updates to mechanical and electrical services are also planned and the building will benefit from new finishes and decoration throughout.

Despite having numerous owners, uses and alterations over the years, the building has retained many of its original features, and promises to offer superior office accommodation for businesses looking to start, grow or relocate in the area. Designed by award winning, Northeast Architect firm, Napper, the completed development will offer nearly 600 square metres of accessible, high-quality office, meeting and storage space, over 4 floors, and is expected to be ready by the end of the year.

Cllr Chris McEwan, cabinet member for economy, said: "I am very excited that work is starting on this important project which is a key development in our plans to transform Northgate and promote social and economic growth in the area.  Darlington is a town on the up and more businesses are looking to invest here. Having the right infrastructure in place to support small business development is essential and will help us to regenerate a part of the town which has been largely neglected for too long - creating more opportunities for local people and businesses, improving the area for residents and visitors, and driving footfall into the heart of the town centre."
