Patrols stepped up to tackle playground vandalism

Police and community safety patrols are being stepped up following a spate of vandalism attacks on playgrounds, which have caused thousands of pounds of damage.

The attacks have taken place at play areas in Lascelles, Brinkburn Driver, Bensham Park and Branksome. In Branksome £10,000 of damage has been caused in the last three weeks.

Police and community safety officers believe groups of young people are to blame for the vandalism and arson attacks and patrols in the areas are being increased to stop further incidents.

Jim Garner, cabinet member for stronger communities, said: “It is devastating that these play areas have been damaged in these mindless attacks. Local communities really value these playgrounds and it is such a shame that they have been targeted in this way. We will work to repair the damage so families can enjoy these areas again.

“As the nights get lighter, I would ask parents to make sure they know where their children are and that they speak to them about the dangers of starting fires. This kind of behaviour is a crime and culprits will be dealt with.”

Inspector David Littlefair, from Darlington neighbourhood police team, said: “It is very disheartening to hear about these acts of mindless vandalism - play parks are set up for the community to enjoy, especially children.

“We believe a small number of people are spoiling it for the local community which Darlington Police are investigating. We are increasing our patrols in these areas, and we urge anyone with any information to contact us by emailing [email protected]”
