World cultures event returns

World cultures event returns
01 July 2025

An event celebrating the rich diversity of cultures from around the world, promises to bring an explosion of colour, rhythm and flavour to Darlington town centre on Sunday 13 July.

The family friendly event will showcase the different cultures of communities living, working and learning in the town through music, dance, food and community spirit. It will feature live performances from dance groups including Spanish Influences, Teesside Irish Dancing and Navrang Arts, who will be performing Bollywood inspired routines. Reid Street Primary School will also take to the stage to showcase traditional songs and interactive African drumming workshops will be available in the Dolphin Centre throughout the day.

Visitors can also embark on a culinary journey thanks to local businesses including Olumo Foods, and Iyawa Afro-Caribbean Foods & Kitchen, who will be offering delicious food and drink samples in the market place.

A range of information and exhibition stalls will also be available including one featuring poems written by local children which have recently been printed in the "Mother Tongue Other Tongue Digital Anthology 2025".

Celebrations begin at 11am in the market place.

Cllr Jim Garner, cabinet member for stronger communities, Darlington Borough Council said, "This event celebrates the different traditions and communities which make up our town and is a vibrant and joyous expression of the diverse experiences of local people. It is an opportunity for people of all ages, and backgrounds to come together, learn and connect - contributing to safer, more engaged communities where people are heard and valued.  Events like this also drive footfall to the town centre which supports local businesses and helps position Darlington as a great place to invest and do business."
