Cycle September celebrates 200 years cycling in the Tees Valley
29 August 2017

Since the invention of the bicycle in 1817, people of all ages all over the world have taken to two wheels to enjoy the great outdoors, improve their physical and mental fitness and enjoy the sense freedom that cycling brings.

Signing up is simple. Businesses and organisations can register online at www.lovetoride.net/teesvalley to join the challenge. Team members can log their rides, which can be as short as 10 minutes, and points are allocated depending on the number of minutes or miles completed.

There are prizes to be won each week of the challenge, from cycling goodies to a dream holiday. Plus spot prizes are also given out to randomly selected cyclists – so there’s a chance for everyone to win, no matter the number of miles ridden.

People living and working in the Tees Valley have been taking part in the Love to Ride cycle challenge since 2015, and to date 133 organisations and over 2,000 people are registered with the programme. Together, they have clocked up more than three quarters of a million miles of cycling, the equivalent of 30 times around the world.

Tees Valley Mayor, Ben Houchen said, “Cycling is a free and healthy way to properly experience our area. Getting involved in the Love to Ride September Challenge gives us the chance to have a bit of fun whilst improving our lifestyles and our environment.”

Since April 2016, over £1.68m has been invested in transport schemes that include cycling and pedestrian paths, as part of the Tees Valley-wide programme of improving sustainable transport in the area.
