Deadline extended for nominations for afternoon tea treat
31 August 2017

The deadline has been extended for nominations of dedicated volunteers to be invited to afternoon tea with the Mayor of Darlington.

September marks 150 years since Queen Victoria granted the town a Charter of Incorporation, which saw the foundation of Darlington’s first local authority and ultimately paved the way for the creation of Darlington Borough Council.

A series of events are being held to mark the 150th anniversary of this piece of Darlington’s history, including an afternoon tea event, hosted by the Mayor of Darlington, Councillor Jan Taylor, to thank and pay tribute to the town’s countless third sector volunteers.

Dozens of nominations have already been received, but the Council is keen to ensure no one misses out, so has extended the deadline to 12 noon on Monday 4 September.

Sponsorship for the event, which will take place in the autumn, in the grand surroundings of Central Hall, is being kindly provided by Darlington Building Society.

Councillor Jan Taylor, Mayor of Darlington, said: “We’ve already had an encouraging number of nominations and it’s both humbling and inspiring to read about the contributions volunteers make.

“I want to say a big thank you to Colin and the team at Darlington Building Society, whose sponsorship of this event will mean we are able to give guests an afternoon to remember.”

Colin Fyfe, Chief Executive of Darlington Building Society, said: “At Darlington Building Society, we have always been proud to play an important role in supporting the local community, so we are delighted to be sponsoring this event, which will give a little something back to those who do so much for our town. If you have been meaning to nominate someone, don’t miss out.”

To nominate someone, send their name and address, as well as your name, the name of your organisation and as well as a description, in no more than 200 words, of why you believe this person should be honoured.

Send your nominations to Shirley Burton, Democratic Manager, Neighbourhood Services and Resources, Darlington Borough Council, Town Hall, Darlington DL1 5QT. Nominations can also be emailed to [email protected]

Invitations will be sent out once all the nominations have been collated.
