National Apprenticeship and Careers Week

National Apprenticeship and Careers Week
06 March 2018

To mark National Apprenticeships and Careers Week,  Lee Morris, employer engagement officer for the council’s Learning & Skills Team, explains what the council can offer to people of all ages who are keen to earn as they learn in the borough.

“We currently have around 70 apprentices placed with 28 employers. As well as the council, employers we work with include HCOne, Anne Cordey Estate Agents, Clark Willis Law Firm LLP, Prestige Motors, Kiddies Corner Nursery, AD Auto Services LTD, The Gardens Care Home and Orchard Court Surgery.

“There are no age restrictions, but all apprenticeships are paid at a minimum of £3.70 an hour for the first year, and then the minimum age-related wage thereafter although some employers choose to pay at a higher rate than the minimum.  Most apprenticeships are at least 12 months in duration, but some can take up to two years, depending on the area and the level.

“Here at Learning & Skills we also offer a Level 5 apprenticeship in Leadership and Management.  There are more and more degree level apprenticeships (levels 4, 5, 6 and 7) becoming available. Other local employers, such as EE, also provide apprenticeships alongside our schemes. I would encourage anyone considering this as a career choice to get in touch or take a look at the national website for more details. Any employers who want to offer an apprentice place can contact me to discuss the options available.”

Councillor Chris McEwan, the council's cabinet member for economy and regeneration, said: “A skilled local workforce is essential if we are to achieve our economic growth potential. Apprenticeships offer an ideal way to match employers with those who wish to improve their skills and work towards nationally recognised qualifications. In addition, they are an ideal way to earn and learn a wide range of practical skills in a real life setting.”
