06 March 2018

Year 5 pupils from Corporation Road Primary School joined in the celebrations as six residents became British citizens at a special ceremony in Darlington.

The children were invited to attend the ceremony which saw six people originally from Cameron, Indian, Nigeria, Spain, Turkey and Jordan gain British citizenship.

The children gave a presentation about the history of Darlington and local culture, including the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage and sang the National Anthem.

The citizenship ceremony was attended by Darlington Mayor Jan Taylor, High Sherriff of Durham Caroline Peacock and Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Durham Sheena Davis

The new citizens, who attended the ceremony with their families and friends, were Shure Lilian; Amrita Sahay; Vincent Nwosu; Nuria Mas; Etem Kurt and Walla Alhalabi.

Cyndi Hughes, the Council’s cabinet member for children and young people, said: “It was lovely for the children to take part in the citizenship ceremony. They did so well and everyone enjoyed listening to what they had to say. I am sure it made the ceremony even more special for everyone involved.”
