Free electric blanket safety tests

Free electric blanket safety tests
12 September 2018

Residents are being urged to book now for free electric blanket safety tests ahead of the colder months.

Despite more than 12 years of testing electric blankets, unsafe blankets are still being discovered in use by Darlington residents. On average this popular event identifies a third of blankets tested as being unsafe.

The council's Trading Standards Team has produced a poster encouraging residents to get their electric blankets checked

The free testing of electric blankets for Darlington residents will take place on Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 September 2018 at Age UK North Yorkshire and Darlington, Bradbury House, Beaumont Street West.

The safety checks, which have been organised by Darlington Borough Council’s Trading Standards Team, Age UK North Yorkshire and Darlington, and County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, will be conducted by a qualified engineer. If you, or someone you know, uses an electric blanket to keep warm over winter, you can book an appointment now by calling 01325 362832.

Councillor Chris McEwan, Cabinet member for Economy and Regeneration, said:  “This is a valuable service that saves lives and the testing is free of charge for Darlington residents so ensure your own safety and help elderly loved ones and neighbours by booking an appointment to have those electric blankets checked. Places go quickly for this popular event so act now and ring to secure your place.”
