Keeping Darlington on the move

Keeping Darlington on the move
11 March 2019

Ever wondered what we are doing to help keep Darlington on the move…look no further!

Darlington Borough Council is delivering a number of initiatives aimed at making it easier to get out and about around Darlington.

On our roads we are currently on site improving McMullen Road roundabout on Yarm Road, to get traffic though the junction more quickly.

Detailed design work has been completed to improve the junction of Yarm Road and Lingfield way and this work will start this spring.  An outline design has also been completed to increase the capacity of the junction whilst retaining the safe crossing facilities for cyclists and pedestrians. Work will start on site in the summer.

We have also been working in partnership with EE to set up a car sharing scheme to reduce the number of cars coming to their Yarm Road site, with benefits for staff, the company, and other users of Yarm Road.

Parkgate Bridge, a new pedestrian and cycle bridge, has been lifted into place over Parkgate, creating a link between Darlington Station and Central Park.  The bridge is due to open this week meaning safer and easier access to the train station for everyone.

We’ve also made bus stop improvements raising kerbs to improve access onto buses, at bus stops in Westmoreland Street, North Road, Willow Road, Cleveland Avenue, Elton Road and Abbey Road.  Dropped kerbs have also been provided to improve walking routes, including at a number of locations requested by residents.

This is by no means an exhaustive list but gives a flavour of some of the work that’s been happening this year to make Darlington more accessible for everyone.

We’ve got lots more planned to help keep Darlington on the move for the coming year so make sure you stay tuned to our social media channel to find out more.
