The Register Office is looking to recruit two part time Deputy Registrars to join the team.

Duties will include the registering of births and deaths, registering and performing marriages at the register office and other venues, civil partnership formations, attending citizenship ceremonies, manage copy certificate applications, make appointments, take payments, give advice to customers on a range of queries including registration processes, process wedding bookings and certificate applications.

The Register Office is a very busy frontline service based at the Town Hall, Darlington dealing with some challenging queries helping people at key moments in their lives. You will help customers on the telephone, in person and through our online systems.

There are two part time posts available both 18 ½ hours per week:
Post 1 will work Monday and Tuesday 08.30 to 17.00 and Wednesday 08.30 to 12.00.
Post 2 will work Wednesday 13.00 – 17.00, Thursday 08.30 – 17.00 and Friday 08.30 – 16.30.
The hours are fixed and cannot be combined to create one single full-time post. Two separate registrars are needed. Flexi-time is part of these posts. Home working is not suitable for this post.

Additional hours may be available for weddings at weekends and to cover holidays and absences.

The successful candidates will be an important and valued member of the register office team and will also be an ambassador for the council and the registration service. Registration experience is not required however the successful candidate must have experience of working with the public in challenging situations, applying rules and regulations, taking payments and keeping accurate records. A high standard of accuracy, literacy and numeracy is important in this role.

The successful candidate also requires good communications skills and to be able to work both as part of a team and independently in helping the public in some sensitive and challenging situations. Good IT skills are essential including a good understanding of MS Office particularly MS Excel and experience of using Web Pay and Netcall would be useful.
 
The following are disqualified from being a registrar: Non Discharged Bankrupt, Authorised Person, Secretary of Synagogues or Registering Officer for the Society of Friends, Minister of Religion, Medical Practitioner, Midwife, Funeral Director or persons involved in the burial or cremation business, celebrant delivering funeral, wedding or naming ceremonies or anyone engaged in the business of life insurance.
