Allotments

The council owns 15 allotment sites in Darlington. There are more than 800 individual plots.

The council manages the Arnold Road, Honeypot Lane and Park Side sites. The rest are self-managed associations, run by committees.

Livestock

Hens are kept at Arnold Road, Barmpton Lane, Cockerton, Five Arches, Hummersknott (West Cemetery), Salters Lane North and Smithfield Road.

Pigeons can only be kept on plots that have already housed pigeons at Arnold Road, Cockerton, Five Arches and Salters Lane North.

Hummersknott, Bellburn Lane and Dodmire allow bees in some areas. Barmpton Lane, Cockerton and Dodmire also have bees on plots.

Renting an allotment

The rent for a full plot on a council site is £175 a year. No concessions are available.

Self-managed sites: each site has different rents and concession rates. Rents are less than council sites.

Council-managed allotment waiting list

There has been a problem!

To apply for an allotment you must be over 18 and live in the borough of Darlington

If you are between 16 and 18 you can apply to go on the waiting list. You will not be able to take over a plot until you are 18.

Once you have applied for an allotment, you must let us know about any change to your contact details. If we can't contact you you will be removed from the waiting list.

You can put your name down for more than one allotment waiting list, but you can only have one allotment garden.

Buddy scheme, council-managed

There has been a problem!

People helping on plots can register as a co-worker. There can be one co-worker per plot. They must show they have been an important part of running the plot for at least three years.

The ‘buddy’ will be put on the waiting list and, if they are at the top of the list when the plot is made available, they will be able to take over the tenancy. A buddy can be aged between 16 and 18, but they will not be able to take over a tenancy until they are over 18.

Self-managed association allotment sites (council owned, run by committee)

Twelve allotment sites are self-managed. To apply for an allotment, change your address, give up your tenancy or submit a buddy application, complete the relevant application form below.
